When It Comes To Politics, The American People Deserve Better

Coverage of last week’s presidential debate unfolded in a predictable way: who won, who lost, who had click-friendly “moments.” But while the event had less noise than its predecessor, it was still very much like the first debate, given how many subjects that truly matter to American voters were left off the table. In fact, the debate had little to do with our country’s economy for the next two decades — which is a major miss. It is also why the majority of Americans tune politics out — and, frankly, hate Washington. And not to put too fine a point on it, we once again heard not a word for how either candidate will use public and private sector support over the next four years to rebuild our devastated small business sector, which is desperately needed to create jobs. Alas, our economic backbone remains more fragile than ever with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the exhibiting signs of another pre-winter wave.

All of which is to say: the American people deserve better than what we get in a political conversation that constantly underserves us. Now that the debates are over, I hope to hear far more substance — especially on economic issues of all kinds as President Trump and Vice President Biden make their closing arguments to the country.
